Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus stuck to the players who did duty in their opening two Rugby Championship matches against Australia for next month’s tour to New Zealand. With wingers Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe injured, Makazole Mapimpi will make the trip down under. The only forward that faced Australia to miss out on selection was utility forward Cobus Wiese, who has been placed on standby. Jasper Wiese is still serving a suspension and will only be eligible for the second encounter in Wellington.
Meanwhile, the Springbok Women got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a comprehensive 66-6 victory over Brazil in Northampton, England. South Africa scored ten tries with Aseza Hele crossing over the line three times, as the Bok Women recorded their first World Cup pool victory since 2010. Coach Swys de Bruin’s side will face Italy next before finishing the pool stage against France.
# Swimming: South Africa’s Kris Mihaylov won gold in the 200-metre butterfly at the World Aquatics Junior Championship in Romania, his first international junior medal. The 18-year-old shattered his previous personal best, taking two seconds off the time he set in the preliminaries to touch in one-minute-56.16-seconds. The silver medal went to David Antal of Hungary, while Turkey’s Tuncer Berk Ertürck claimed the bronze. Italy’s Carlos D’Ambrosio and China’s Peiqi Yang closed out the competition as the best overall male and female athletes, respectively.
Meanwhile, swimmer Tatjana Smith, who clinched four Olympic medals, won sportswoman and sports star of the year at the South African Sport Awards. She retired after last year’s Paris Games. Sportsman of the year went to cyclist Alan Hatherly. Para athletes Simoné Kruger and Mpumelelo Mhlongo were named sportswoman and sportsman of the year with a disability, respectively. The four-by-100-metres men’s relay team won team of the year following their silver medal in Paris. Smith says representing the country has been special:
# And cricket: Australia avoided a series whitewash by beating South Africa by a record 276 runs in the third and final one-day match in Mackay, Queensland. Travis Head, Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh all scored centuries as the hosts posted a mammoth 431 for two in their allotted 50-overs. In reply, Cooper Connolly claimed his maiden five-wicket haul as the Proteas were dismissed for 155. This was Australia’s biggest victory by runs at home in ODIs, and their second-biggest overall in the format. South Africa nonetheless won the series 2-1.
