Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: South Africa’s Women’s World Cup opener against Brazil at Franklin’s Garden in Northampton, England, on Sunday will be a first Test between the two nations. Springbok utility back Nadine Roos, who faced Brazil four times in the 2024 Sevens series, says the team is determined to reverse past defeats. She emphasises teamwork and shutting down Brazil’s space on the ball, as the squad steps up training ahead of the clash:
# Cricket: Proteas off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action in Tuesday’s first one-day match against Australia in Cairns and will miss the rest of the series. The International Cricket Council says the match officials’ report specified concerns about the legality of Subrayen’s action. The first match was Subrayen’s debut in the 50-over format, where he bowled ten overs and nabbed the wicket of Travis Head. Subrayen will undergo an independent assessment of his bowling action at an ICC-accredited testing facility.
Meanwhile, the Proteas can clinch the one-day series against Australia tomorrow after Tuesday’s convincing victory in Cairns. Aiden Markram, captain Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke’s half-centuries propelled South Africa to a huge score of 296 for eight, whereafter spinner Keshav Maharaj took his first five-wicket haul in one-day internationals to help bowl the hosts out for 198. The Proteas’ tour will end with Sunday’s final ODI, also in Mackay, after Australia won the T20 series 2-1.
# Athletics: Jamaica’s Oblique Seville claimed gold in the men’s 100-metres at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, in an impressive 9.87-seconds. Olympic champion American Noah Lyles came in second, with Jamaican Ackeem Blake and South African Akani Simbine finishing third and fourth, respectively. England’s Keely Hodgkinson clinched the women’s 800-metres in a meeting record of one-minute-55.69-seconds, while South Africa’s Prudence Sekgodiso finished sixth. American Josh Hoey won the men’s 800-metres in one-minute-42.82-second ahead of Kenya’s Olympic champion, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui.
# And finally, Tennis: Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori are the US Open mixed doubles champions for the second year running. They defeated the number three seeds Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in a match-tiebreak at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. This is just the fifth time a mixed doubles team has gone back-to-back at the New York major, and only the second time in four decades. Vavassori says he enjoyed playing this reimagined mixed doubles format:
