Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with cricket: Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match one-day series against Australia through injury. The 30-year-old underwent scans yesterday which revealed he has inflammation in his right ankle. He will remain in Australia and undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the team’s medical staff. Australian captain, Mitch Marsh, won the toss and chose to bowl first in the first ODI currently underway in Cairns. Dewald Brevis is making his ODI debut for the Proteas, who scored 296 for eight.
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has called up experienced wing Makazole Mapimpi to the squad ahead of their second Rugby Championship match against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday. Captain Siya Kolisi and Kurt-Lee Arendse have been released from the squad after suffering injuries in Saturday’s shock 38-22 defeat against the Wallabies. They are expected to be sidelined for a few weeks. Erasmus has enough cover in the squad at loose forward, and has opted to call up Mapimpi, who boasts 47 Tests, as backline cover.
Meanwhile, the Wallabies expect a huge onslaught from South Africa in this Test after humiliating the world champions in Johannesburg. The Springboks squandered its 22-point lead to give the Wallabies their first victory at Ellis Park since 1963. Australian lock Will Skelton says the Boks will try and punch them in the face so they have to be ready. He also says the Wallabies’ victory in the final Test against the British and Irish Lions gave them much-needed confidence.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana have been knocked out of the African Nations Championship after playing to a 3-all draw against Uganda in Kampala. Goals from Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Thabiso Kutumela, and Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo gave South Africa a 3-1 lead, but they conceded two late penalties. Uganda finished as Group C winners, while Algeria and South Africa both finished on six points, but Bafana fell short on goal difference. Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki says he is still proud of his players:
# And finally, tennis: World number two Carlos Alcaraz of Spain won his first Cincinnati Open after defending champion Jannik Sinner was forced to retire just 23-minutes into the final. The Italian was trailing love-5 when he called for the doctor, but was unable to continue. In the women’s draw, reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini in straight sets to win her maiden Cincinnati Open title. She is the first Polish player in the Open era to win a singles title at the event.
