# We start with cricket: South Africa resumed its first innings on 465 for four on the second morning of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo after captain Wiaan Mulder scored an unbeaten double-century yesterdag. The Proteas lost two early wickets after being sent in to bat, but a 184-run partnership between Mulder and David Bedingham steadied the ship. Bedingham departed for 82 while teenager Lhuan-dré Pretorius scored 78. Mulder, who reached 300 in the morning session today, holds the record for the highest individual score on captaincy debut in Tests.
Meanwhile, India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston to level the five-match series one-all. Set a mammoth 608 runs to win, the hosts were dismissed for 271 late on the final day. India’s Akash Deep was impressive with the ball throughout the Test as he completed a ten-wicket match haul. The third Test at Lord’s starts on Thursday. England captain Ben Stokes says the pitch didn’t suit his side:
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says they are ready to begin their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence against Ghana in Morocco this evening. South Africa, ranked second in Africa, also plays Mali and Tanzania in Group C. The Ghanaians return to the women’s continental competition after an absence of seven years. Ellis says they are in a tough group, but she is confident in her players:
# Rugby: Coach Les Kiss has named a strong Australia-New Zealand invitational squad to face the British and Irish Lions in Adelaide on Saturday. The squad includes 18 internationals with a combined 300 caps. They include All Blacks David Havili, Shannon Frizell and Hoskins Sotutu, with the Australia contingent led by Marika Koroibete, Pete Samu and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. Kiss says a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to build this squad, and it’s exciting to see it come together.
# And finally, motorsport: McLaren’s Lando Norris won a rain-affected British Grand Prix, his first victory on home soil. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, who received a ten-second penalty for a safety car controversy, finished second. Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg finished third from 19th on the grid for his maiden Formula One podium. Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth in his first race at Silverstone as a Ferrari driver, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in fifth. Norris has now reduced Piastri’s drivers’ championship lead to eight points.
