Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with tennis: South Africa’s Lloyd Harris is through to the second round of Wimbledon after winning his opening match against Zizou Bergs of Belgium. Harris won in four sets in just over four hours. It was a close match from the start, with the first three sets tightly contested. Harris won the first two, with Bergs taking the third set, but Harris dominated the fourth to win. He served 23 aces and only registered four double faults.
# Soccer: Fluminense sent Inter Milan packing from the Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory in Charlotte that took the Brazilian side through to the quarterfinals. A header by German Cano gave Fluminense an early lead, with substitute Hercules sealing their victory late in the match. Fluminense is the second Brazilian side to make the last eight after Palmeiras had already sealed their quarterfinal spot. Colombian winger Jhon Arias, who was named Man of the Match, says they are not only representing Fluminense but a whole continent.
More soccer news: Argentinian legend Lionel Messi will be honoured with a tribute match at Spanish giants Barcelona’s Camp Nou as soon as the revamp of the iconic stadium had been completed. Messi played for the team for almost 20 years before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. During that time, he scored 520 goals and won 34 major titles, including ten in La Liga and four in the UEFA Champions League. Vice-president Elena Fort says the tribute should take place when Camp Nou is 100-percent finished, describing Messi as the best player in Barca’s history.
# Cricket: England named an unchanged team for the second Test against India, starting at Edgbaston tomorrow, after winning the first match at Headingley by five wickets. This means there still isn’t a return for pace bowler Jofra Archer after an absence of four years, but he will join the squad today. India had never won a Test in Birmingham, losing seven and drawing one since their first appearance in 1967. The rest of the Tests will be played at Lord’s, Old Trafford and The Oval in London.
# And finally, rugby: Two experienced French players may miss Saturday’s first Test against the All Blacks in Dunedin through injury. Fullback Cheikh Tiberghien and winger Gabin Villiere were expected to be named in head coach Fabian Galthie’s starting-15, with the visitors already lacking many of the players who’ve helped secured this year’s Six Nations title. Five members of the Top 14 finalists, Toulouse and Bordeaux-Begles, will strengthen the French squad when they join the squad for the remaining two Tests in Wellington and Hamilton.
