Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus told flamboyant flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezula he doesn’t have to make magic on the field all the time. The young player will don the number 10 jersey in Saturday’s match against the Barbarians in Cape Town, with the more experienced Manie Libbok on the bench, and veteran Handré Pollard not playing this week. Erasmus says 23-year-old Feinberg-Mngomezula has only played in eight Tests so far and is still learning, and has to bring balance into his game.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s Dan Sheehan will captain the British and Irish Lions on his debut when they face Western Force in Perth, Australia, on Saturday. Coach Andy Farrell has responded to their defeat to Argentina in Dublin last week by making 13 changes. Garry Ringrose, James Lowe, Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier will also make their debuts in the starting line-up. The starting side consists of eight Irish players, four from Scotland, two from England and Tomos Williams as the only Welshman.
# Soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns had been eliminated from the Club World Cup after playing to a goalless draw with Fluminense in Miami Gardens, Florida. The South African league champions needed a victory to progress to the last 16. Sundowns finished third in Group F with four points, just one behind Fluminense, who advanced alongside Borussia Dortmund. Sundowns coach, Miguel Cardoso, says his players can return to South Africa with their heads held high:
# Cricket: The Proteas’ men’s and women’s teams will be involved in simultaneous series in New Zealand in March next year. The men will play the Black Caps in a five-match T20 series while the women will face the White Ferns on the same days and at the same venues. The matches will take place in Mount Maunganui, Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Cricket South Africa’s director of national teams, Enoch Nkwe, describes the double series as an exciting step forward in the country’s relationship with New Zealand Cricket.
# And finally, athletics: Kenya’s triple Olympic champion in the one-thousand-500-metres, Faith Kipyegon, will try to become the first woman to run the mile in under four minutes in the French capital of Paris tonight. Nike’s “Breaking4” project follows the success of Kipyegon’s compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s unofficial sub-two hour marathon. The world-renowned manufacturer believes her 85-gram super-spikes will give her a very good chance. Kipyegon, who will be helped by pacers, have to shave off over seven seconds from her own 2023 world record over the distance.
