Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns got their Club World Cup campaign off to a winning start by beating South Korea’s Ulsan HD 1-0 in Orlando, Florida. Iqraam Rayners’s goal in the 36th minute and two vital saves by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams sealed the victory for the reigning PSL champions. Sundowns are now top of Group F after Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund played to a goalless draw against Brazil’s Fluminense in New Jersey. Sundowns’ next group match is against Dortmund on Saturday.
# Cricket: The Proteas Women defeated the West Indies by 166 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the third and final ODI in Barbados to clinch the series 2-1. Tazmin Brits scored 101, as South Africa’s innings was shortened due to rain interruptions, leading to the visitors posting 278 for six in 45.4 overs. The hostesses were then bowled out for 121, well short of the revised target of 294, with Masabata Klaas finishing with career-best figures of four wickets for 25 runs in six overs.
# Rugby: The British and Irish Lions have called up Leicester scrumhalf Jack van Poortfliet as cover for injured Irish player Jamison Gibson-Park, who suffered a minor injury. Head coach Andy Farrell has asked several players to help the Lions prepare for their warm-up match against the Pumas before their tour of Australia as team members were involved in the finals of the Premiership and the United Rugby Championship. The Lions play Argentina in Dublin on Friday, and the tour starts against Western Force in Perth next Saturday.
# Motorsport: Canada will host a Formula One Grand Prix until at least 2035. This follows the sport’s signing of an extention to Quebec and Canada’s deal to host a race in Montreal, which hosted it’s first Grand Prix in 1978. The race had been in doubt after F1 CEO Stefano Dominicali issued a stern warning following complaints over the organisation and logistics last year. On Sunday, everything went much smoother and the deal, originally due to run until 2031, had been extended by another four years.
# And finally, athletics: The world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, has officially been named a Guinness World Records Icon. The former Jamaican sprinter was given the honour for his achievements in the sport and for being a global inspiration. His 9.58-seconds is the fastest anyone in the world has run over 100-metres, while his time of 9.63-seconds at the Games in London in 2012 is also an unbeaten Olympic record. Bolt says he is honoured to receive this accolade:
