Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have Cricket: Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada says he is ready for Australia’s infamous sledging tactics, which will only serve to motivate him further. The two nations are preparing to face off in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, England, next week. The last time the 30-year-old played at the hallowed ground, he got a five-wicket haul against England in August 2022. Rabada says he understands his pivotal role in the squad and recognises the Australians will likely attempt to provoke him, which is part of the game.
In more Cricket news, the International Cricket Council has confirmed that the Women’s 50-over World Cup, scheduled for later this year, will be held at five venues across India and Sri Lanka. India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the men’s Champions Trophy earlier this year prompted the ICC to introduce neutral venues to tournaments hosted by either nation. The tournament will be played in the Indian cities of Bengaluru, Guwahati, Indore, and Visakhapatnam, and the Sri Lankan city of Colombo, a neutral venue where Pakistan will play all their group games.
# Golf: South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen has secured his spot at the 125th US Open at the Oakmont Country Club next week. The 35-year-old fired rounds of 64 and 67 to finish first on 13-under 131 at a qualifying event at the Kinsale Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. Van Rooyen, a two-time PGA winner, missed the cut in his last three US Open starts over the past four years. Meanwhile, Americans Rickie Fowler and Max Homa have failed to qualify for the major.
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana is looking to finish the inaugural Tri-Nations Series strong when they face Zambia at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria this afternoon. South Africa comes into the match following a 3–2 win over Botswana last Wednesday, while Zambia were held to a 1-1 draw by the same side this past weekend. The series is in preparation for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July. Coach Desiree Ellis says Zambia will be a tough opponent:
# And finally: Roadrunning: South African ultra-marathon star Gerda Steyn says her goal is to complete the coveted Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon double this year. The 35-year-old claimed her fifth straight Two Oceans Marathon victory in Cape Town in April, and will now aim to win her third consecutive Comrades title in the 89-kilometre Comrades Down Run on Sunday. Steyn says she is energised by the depth and talent within the field, viewing the challenging lineup as motivation to push her limits.
