Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have soccer news: Amajita are returning home today as U-20 Africa Cup of Nations champions after edging Morocco 1–nil in the final in Cairo, Egypt. It’s South Africa’s first title in the tournament, 28 years after their previous final appearance in 1997. Eighteen-year-old, Gomolemo Kekana, sealed the win with a VAR-approved strike in the 70th minute. The team swept the individual awards with Tylon Smith named Best Player, while goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe earned both Best Goalkeeper and Man of the Match in the final.
# Cricket: The Mumbai Indians have signed England duo Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson and Sri Lanka’s Charith Asalanka. The three are replacements for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch, who are all set to leave for national duties after Mumbai’s last league game. The replacement players will be available from the playoffs stage onwards, should Mumbai qualify. Mumbai Indians will need to beat the Delhi Capitals tomorrow to secure the final available playoff spot.
# Rugby: A Six Nations match will be played on a Thursday for the first time ever next year, when defending champion France will host Ireland on the fifth of February. The encounter was moved not to clash with the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy, the following day. The competition will feature only one rest weekend compared to the normal two. France must still confirm its home venues after it hadn’t received a satisfactory proposal to stay at the Stade de France in Paris.
And in more Ruby news, a combined Australian and New Zealand team will face the British and Irish Lions for the first time since 1989 this year. The team will be coached by Les Kiss, who takes over from Joe Schmidt at the Wallabies next year. The game will be played in Adelaide, Australia, on the 12th of July. The Lions’ tour of Australia starts on the 28th of June and will conclude on the second of August after three Tests against the Wallabies and another six matches.
# And finally, Golf: Former Masters champion, Sergio Garcia, has failed to qualify for next month’s US Open, for the first time since 1999. The Spaniard bogeyed his final hole in 36-hole qualifying at Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas, to finish on six under and missed out. Ryder Cup captain Edoardo Molinari of Italy was among eight players to progress through Monday’s qualifier at Walton Heath in England, and three more earned their spots in the Japan event. The final ten qualifiers will be held on June 2nd.
