# We start off with soccer: South Africa defeated Morocco 1-0 to win their maiden Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations title in Cairo, Egypt. Gomolemo Kekana’s 70th-minute goal proved decisive, as Amajita secured their first-ever continental title. South Africa also capped off a historic tournament by sweeping key individual awards. Tylon Smith was named best player, and Fletcher Lowe won the best goalkeeper award, recording the highest number of saves, 24, during the tournament. Nigeria claimed third place after beating hosts Egypt 4-1 on penalties.
# Golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler secured his third major title by winning the US PGA Championship for the first time at Quail Hollow. The American won by five strokes, the biggest championship victory since Rory McIlroy’s eight-shot win in 2012. Americans Bryson DeChambeau, Davis Riley and Harris English shared second place on six under. McIlroy’s bid for back-to-back major titles ended in a tied-47th finish. Scheffler says this was a hard-fought win:
# Motorsport: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, Italy, to claim his second victory of the season. The Dutchman passed pole-sitter Oscar Piastri’s McLaren on the first lap and controlled the race to secure the victory. Lando Norris finished second ahead of his teammate Piastri, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Williams’ Alex Albon rounded up the top five. The result sees Piastri’s drivers’ championship lead over Norris reduced to 13 points, while Verstappen closes to within 22 points of the Australian.
# Tennis: Twenty-two-year-old Carlos Alcaraz has won the Italian Open title for the first time in his career, and his third title of the year. The Spaniard defeated world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy, 7-6, 6-1, to claim his seventh ATP Masters One-thousand title. On Saturday, Jasmine Paolini defeated American Coco Gauff, 6-4, 6-2, ending a 40-year wait for a home winner of the women’s singles. Alcaraz says it is always a tough battle when he plays against Sinner:
# And finally, rugby: Moana Pasifika’s Ardie Savea has won the inaugural Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year award, as voted for by club captains and coaches. The All Blacks loose forward has made ten appearances for Moana this season, scoring five tries, completing 110 tackles and winning 15 turnovers. Super Rugby Pacific CEO, Jack Mesley, says Savea’s passionate leadership and dominant performances have made an indelible mark on his teammates, his opponents and the competition as a whole.
