Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: South Africa’s United Rugby Championship teams are preparing for a Welsh invasion. While the Bulls have secured their spot in the top four already, the Sharks are looking to seal a home quarter-final, while the Stormers and the Lions have to win to reach the top eight. The Sharks face Ospreys in Durban this evening. Tomorrow the Bulls and Cardiff meet in Pretoria, and the Stormers face the Dragons in Cape Town. On Sunday the Lions host Scarlets in Johannesburg.
Meanwhile, Irish and English players make out the bulk of the British and Irish Lions’ squad for this year’s tour of Australia. Captain Maro Itoje is joined by 12 other players from England, while Ireland has 15 players in the group. Scotland is represented by eight players, while Wales’ 17th successive Test losses is reflected by the fact that only two of its players made the cut – captain Jac Morgan and scrumhalf Tomos Williams. South African-born Scottish players Duhan van der Merwe and Pierre Schoeman were also included.
# Cricket: The eight remaining games of the Pakistan Super League have been moved to the United Arab Emirates amid escalating border tensions between India and Pakistan. At least 31 civilians were killed and 46 wounded when India fired missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered parts of Kashmir on Wednesday. According to reports, one drone misfired and led to an explosion near the Rawalpindi cricket stadium. The PSL’s organisers say they remain keen for the tournament to be completed, but the safety of players gets priority.
# Soccer: Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur in an all-English Europa League final in Bilbao, Spain, on May 21st. Two goals from Mason Mount saw United come from a goal down to beat Athletic Club 4-1 in the second leg of their semifinal at Old Trafford to win the tie 7-1 on aggregate. Tottenham advanced to their first European final in six-years after beating Bodø/Glimt 2-0 for a 5-1 aggregate victory. United manager Ruben Amorim says making the final is special:
# And finally, Olympic Games: The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the SoFi Stadium will share the opening ceremony of the 2028 Games in southern California, something that has never been done before. The Coliseum, which will also host the closing ceremony, will become the first venue to host events for three Olympics after 1932 and ’84. LA28 chairperson Casey Wasserman says these two venues will highlight Los Angeles’ rich sporting history and cutting-edge future, showcasing the very best the city has to offer on the world stage.
