Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Junior Springbok coach Kevin Foote has expressed disappointment at their second-half performance against Australia in the second round of the Under-20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha. Australia overturned a 17-point after half-time to beat South Africa 29-24. Foote says their discipline and play at the breakdowns were a major problem they will need to address ahead of Sunday’s clash against New Zealand:
More rugby news: Chances are slim Ireland’s captain, Caelan Doris, will tour Australia with the British and Irish Lions. The eighthman, who was regarded as a possible tour captain, sustained an injury and will have to undergo an operation. He faces months on the sideline. Lions head coach Andy Farrell is expected to name his touring squad tomorrow. They will face the Wallabies in three Tests and also play six other matches during the tour from the 28th of next month until the second of August.
# Cricket: Indian great Virat Kohli credits former South African wicketkeeper Mark Boucher for having the biggest influence on his career. Kohli was only 19 when he started playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League in 2008. He says Boucher was his only teammate to point out his weaknesses and helped him to rectify it. Boucher also told him that when he returns to India to commentate in four years’ time and doesn’t find Kohli playing for his country, he would do a disservice to himself.
# Soccer: FIFA has announced that Los Angeles FC and Club América will face off in a one-off playoff to determine who will replace Club León in the FIFA Club World Cup in the US. The club lost its appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In March, FIFA determined that Club Leon and fellow Mexican team Pachuca did not meet the multi-club ownership rules. The winner of the one-off play-off tie will be in Group D, alongside Chelsea, Flamengo, and Esperance Sportive de Tunis.
# And finally, motorsport: Formula One team Alpine has confirmed that reserve driver Franco Colapinto will replace Jack Doohan for the next five races, starting with next weekend’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola in Italy. Doohan has struggled to match teammate Pierre Gasly and has failed to score a single point after six rounds of his rookie F1 campaign. The 22-year-old Australian will remain with Alpine as a reserve driver. This follows yesterday’s announcement that team principal Oliver Oakes had resigned with immediate effect.
