Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Haashim Pead scored two tries as the Junior Springboks defeated Argentina 36-25 in the opening round of the U20 Rugby Championship at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha. South Africa overturned a 20-15 half-time deficit to secure the win. Meanwhile, Sid Harvey converted a last-minute try as Australia held defending Champions New Zealand to a 29-29 draw in their opening match. Junior Springbok coach Kevin Foote praised his team’s resilience and leadership:
# Boxing: South Africa’s Kevin Lerena has retained his World Boxing Council Bridgerweight title by beating Ukraine’s Serhiy Radchenko in the third of 12 rounds at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria. This is the first time a WBC world title has been defended on South African soil. The bridgerweight class is between the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions to accommodate small heavyweight boxers. Lerena says he is delighted at the win and making history on home soil:
# Soccer: The English Football Association has confirmed that transgender women will no longer be able to play in the women’s game in England from June 1st. This follows the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. The FA says it understands that this decision will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify. About 20 transgender women have been playing in English grassroots games this season.
# Motorsport: McLaren’s Lando Norris insists that he is not worried about teammate Oscar Piastri taking momentum as the new drivers’ championship leader. The Briton won the season opener in Australia, while Piastri has gone on to notch up three race wins, leading to the Australian now heading the drivers’ standings by ten points from Norris, ahead of this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix. Norris says the team is working hard to get him more comfortable with the car:
# And finally Cricket: Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi will need support to handle overnight stardom to achieve his full potential. His Rajasthan Royals coach Rahul Dravid said it would be impossible to completely shield Suryavanshi from public attention, but the teenager would have to find a way to cope with it with support from people close to him. Suryavanshi smashed 101 off 38 balls in Monday’s Indian Premier League match against Gujarat Titans. It is the second-fastest century in IPL history and the teenager is already considered the new superstar of Indian cricket.
