Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have rugby: Springbok fullback Willie le Roux and flank Marco van Staden are back in the Bulls’ squad to face defending champions Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship in Scotland tonight. Le Roux, who underwent minor surgery last month, is on the bench, while Van Staden starts at number eight after missing last weekend’s game against Munster. SA Under-20 lock Jacobus Grobbelaar is set to make his debut from the bench. The Bulls are currently third on the URC log, four points behind second-placed Glasgow.
# Athletics: Sprinter Gift Leotlela has won the men’s 100-metres title at South Africa’s senior championships in Potchefstroom. He beat world junior champion and Olympics silver medallist Bayanda Walaza by just 0.01 seconds, finishing in 9.99 seconds. Walaza came second in ten seconds, and Benjamin Richardson took third place in 10.05 seconds. Both Leotlela and Walaza have now qualified for the 100-metre event at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.
# Road running: Kenyan triple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon will attempt to become the first woman to run a mile in under four-minutes in Paris, France, on the 26th of June. This is part of Nike’s Breaking4 project, mirroring the brand’s previous Breaking2 initiative with world champion Eliud Kipchoge. Nike Sport Research Lab vice president Amy Jones Vaterlaus says Kipyegon will utilise advanced footwear and male pacers during the attempt. She says the run aims to inspire and redefine women’s distance running.
# Tennis: World number two Carlos Alcaraz hopes to be fit for the defence of his French Open title. The Spaniard withdrew from his home tournament in Madrid yesterday with hamstring and groin injuries sustained during his defeat to Holger Rune of Denmark in the final of the Barcelona Open. Alcaraz says he will undergo more medical tests next week and will then know how long he will be sidelined. The French Open, the claycourt Grand Slam tournament, starts in Paris on the 25th of next month.
# And finally, motorsport: Six-time MotoGP world champion, Marc Marquez, says he is excited for this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, his home race. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider has been impressive this season, winning three of the opening four races. He currently leads the riders’ standings by 17 points ahead of his younger brother Alex. Marquez, who has won in Jerez three times, says although it’s a particularly special race for him, it’s just as important as the others and requires careful preparation:
