Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The Cheetahs have welcomed Tielman Nieuwoudt to their squad. The powerful loosehead prop is a product of Grey College in Bloemfontein. Nieuwoudt has represented the Blue Bulls and Bulls since 2022 and will officially join the Cheetahs ahead of this year’s Currie Cup in July. More good news for the Cheetahs faithful is that hooker Vernon Paulo has committed his future to the team by extending his contract for another two years.
# Cricket: KL Rahul scored an unbeaten 57 as Delhi Capitals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets for their sixth victory of the Indian Premier League campaign. Mukesh Kumar took four wickets as Lucknow was restricted to 159 for six in their 20 overs. In reply, Delhi reached the target with 13 balls to spare. The victory sees Delhi join leaders Gujarat Titans on 12 points, but is behind them on net run-rate, while Lucknow is fifth.
# Athletics: Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout is set to make his senior international debut at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September. The 17-year-old, who has been compared with Jamaican great Usain Bolt, has been included in Australia’s team for the championships. The Queenslander will run in the 200 metres after clocking 19.84-seconds in Perth this month to win his first national title. Gout says he is looking forward to see what he can do in Tokyo against the best of the best.
# Tennis: Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic says his desire and passion remain, although his motivation isn’t the same without his legendary rivals – Rafael Nadal of Spain and Roger Federer of Switzerland. The 38-year-old Serbian hasn’t won a single tournament so far this season, but says he still wants to compete for the biggest prizes. Djokovic plays in the Madrid Open in Spain from this week with the hope to build momentum for the French Open, starting in Paris on the 25th of next month.
# And finally, Olympic Games: American gymnast Simone Biles hasn’t decided yet whether she will participate in the next Games in Los Angeles. The most decorated gymnast in history was named sports woman of the year at the Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday. Biles says last year’s Games in Paris where she added another three gold medals to take her tally to seven, took a huge toll on her body. She says to participate in her home Games, she would really need to be thrilled by the idea.
