Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have road running: Cape Town’s most iconic race, the Two Oceans Marathon, could be coming to an end, as the City of Cape Town has withdrawn its support over permit breaches. The metro issued two permits for the marathon held on the fifth and sixth of this month – 14-thousand athletes for the 56-kilometre ultra-marathon and 17-thousand for the 21-kilometre half-marathon. According to the metro, the organisers allowed 20-thousand-600 athletes for the ultra-marathon and 17-thousand-677 for the half-marathon. The organisers are consulting their lawyers.
# Rugby: Captain Nolusindiso Booi will make history on Saturday, as she becomes the first Springbok Women’s player to reach 50 Test caps. South Africa will face Spain in Elche, their first Test of the season. Booi will reach the historic milestone 15 years after her debut in 2010. Performance coach, Swys de Bruin, says Booi is a real example to all involved in the women’s game:
# Motorsport: MotoGP champion Jorge Martin is set for another absence of up to three months after his season just got worse during last weekend’s Grand Prix in Qatar. It was the Spaniard’s first race of the season after suffering three injuries in pre-season training, but he fell off his bike on the 14th lap and was struck by Italian Fabio Giannantonio. This caused a collapsed lung and 11 broken ribs. Doctors ordered the Aprilia driver to stay in the Middle East for two weeks before returning home.
# Commonwealth Games: Seven countries confirmed interest in hosting the event in 2030 or 2034, allaying fears the age-old competition will end with next year’s Games in Glasgow. The Scottish city stepped in last year after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew as host for financial reasons. Glasgow’s offer of a scaled-back event reportedly attracted interest from other potential hosts because of the lessened cost. The bids will be examined for feasibility over the next five months, and the preferred bidder for 2030 should be announced in November.
# And finally, the International Shooting Sport Federation has welcomed the return of shooting events to the heart of the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028. The federation says the Games will feature target shooting at a temporary indoor range in Long Beach and shotgun events at the Los Angeles Clay Shooting Sports Park in El Monte, both within Los Angeles County. The federation’s president, Luciano Rossi, praised the decision, emphasising the importance of athletes being integrated into the main Olympic experience.
