Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The Springboks’ one-point heroics during the 2023 World Cup in France led to a record-setting series on M-Net last year. The five-part-series, Chasing the Sun Two – A Story for South Africa, had the most viewers for DStv channel 101’s traditional movie night slot at eight o’clock on a Sunday night and outperformed popular Hollywood productions and shows. Multichoice CEO Byron du Plessis says Chasing the Sun Two is a shining example of how world-class storytelling resonates deeply with South Africans.
Meanwhile, Springbok Women’s Sevens player, Zintle Mpupha, says they are determined to keep their momentum from the opening two legs of the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series. South Africa, which is second on the log table, is in Poland for the third and final tournament in the competition. The top four teams will have a shot at qualifying for the final tournament of the season, early next month in Los Angeles. Mpupha says they are confident:
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana came from a goal down to register a 2-1 victory against Malawi in their second friendly international at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. South Africa beat the Scorchers 3-0 on Saturday. Goals from Hildah Magaia and Amogelang Motau earned the win for Desiree Ellis’s team. Banyana Banyana is preparing for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July. Ellis says there are still areas they need to improve on ahead of WAFCON:
# Motorsport: Defending MotoGP champion Jorge Martin hopes to return to action during this coming weekend’s Grand Prix in Qatar – if he passes a medical check. The Spaniard missed the year’s first three races after suffering multiple fracturies during pre-season practice crashes. He is set to make his debut for Aprilia after winning the title for Ducati last year. Martin says he isn’t sure he will be fit enough to finish the race, but wants to take it one step at a time.
# And finally, golf: Two-time champion Bernhard Langer expects an emotional farewell when he competes in the US Masters for the final time this weekend. The 67-year-old German won the coveted Green Jacket in 1985 and again in 1993, and will compete in the famous tournament at Augusta in Georgia for the 41st time. He describes his two victories as the most important of his career, being his sole major titles. Langer says although this will be his final Masters, he still plans to play competitively for some time.
