Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with road running: The City of Cape Town says more than 30-thousand athletes will participate in the 54th edition of the Two Oceans Marathon this weekend. The ultramarathon will take runners on a 56-kilometre route from Newlands and finish off on the foot of Table Mountain at the University of Cape Town on Saturday. The half marathon over 21.1-kilometre will take place on Sunday. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says 89 countries will be represented:
# Cricket: Former New Zealand Test captain Kane Williamson is in favour of designated windows for the international game, believing this could help turn the World Test Championship into a more level competition. The International Cricket Council will consider proposed changes to the format later this month following criticism over uneven schedules and a confusing points system. Williamson says the current cycle in which Australia, England and India play far more matches than anyone else, was not ideal. South Africa plays Australia in the final of the current cycle.
More cricket news is that Punjab Kings recorded back-to-back victories when they beat Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League. Arshdeep Singh claimed four wickets as LSG were restricted to 171 for seven in their 20 overs. Prabhsimran Singh then top-scored with 69 off 34 balls while captain Shreyas Iyer contributed an unbeaten 52 as Punjab reached the target in 16.2 overs. This is LSG’s second defeat in three games. Today, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Gujarat Titans.
# Motorsport: Red Bull expects from new driver Yuki Tsunoda to just stay as close as possible to Dutch world champion Max Verstappen in his home Grand Prix in Japan this coming weekend. This follows after he replaced Liam Lawson of New Zealand after just two races. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Tsunoda to try and aid the team’s cause as they are lying third in the constructors’ champion. The 24-year-old says he will be happy if he finishes in the top ten at Suzuka.
# And finally, tennis: Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka earned his first tour-level win of the season in the first round of the Tiriac Open in Bucharest, Romania. He battled past qualifier Timofey Skatov of Kazakhstan in three sets. Wawrinka is the third player aged 40 or over to win an ATP Tour or Grand Slam match on clay since 1980. Defending champion, Hungarian Marton Fucsovics, overcame Italian Luca Nardi to set up a second-round clash with Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a rematch of last year’s final.
