Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have rugby news: Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe won the men’s player of the year award at the SA Rugby Awards, becoming the first backline player since 2013 to take the prestigious title. Nadine Roos won the women’s player of the year. Bok flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu scooped the young player of the year award, while Blitzboks speedster Selvyn Davids won Sevens player of the year. The Springboks and Rassie Erasmus were named team and coach of the year, respectively. Kolbe says winning was unexpected:
More rugby news: France’s head coach, Fabien Galthie, has given Maxime Lucu injured captain Antoine Dupont’s number nine jersey for tomorrow’s Six Nations clash with Scotland in Paris. He says it was impossible to drop the 32-year-old after he impressed against Ireland last week when he replaced Dupont before halftime. Experienced Gael Fickou will play centre in Pierre-Louis Barassi’s place in the only other change to the team that potentially ended the Irish’s hope for a third consecutive title.
# Cricket: English batter Harry Brook has been banned from the Indian Premier League for the next two seasons after he again pulled out of the lucrative T20 competition. The 26-year-old missed last year’s edition for Delhi Capitals because of the death of his grandmother, and informed the team earlier this month he needs time to recharge after the busiest period in his career to date. The IPL says the ban is part of a policy informed to each player before they register for the annual auction.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Mark Wood underwent an operation for a knee injury that will likely keep him out of all of England’s home Tests this season. He has been ruled out until the end of July, and will hopefully be back for the start of the Ashes in Australia in November. Wood has been managing an ongoing issue for over a year, but the injury was aggravated during the Champions Trophy. He only returned recently after an elbow injury kept him out of action since August last year.
# And finally, tennis: Two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz is through to his fourth consecutive semifinal at the Indian Wells Masters. The Spaniard defeated Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo and will next face Briton Jack Draper, who beat American Ben Shelton. Fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia battled past France’s Arthur Fils. In the women’s draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland and Russian Mirra Andreeva are through to the semifinals. Alcaraz says he enjoys playing at Indian Wells:
