Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have athletics: Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway set new world records in the indoor mile and the indoor one-thousand-500-meter in World Athletics’ Indoor Tour Gold Meeting in Lievin, France. He bettered the record in the mile that American Yared Nuguse set only five days ago, finishing in over a second faster in three-minutes-45.14-seconds. Ingebrigtsen’s new record time in the one-thousand-500 is three-minutes-29.36-seconds, bettering his own record set at the same meeting three years ago. The 24-year-old won gold medals in long-distance at the previous two Olympic Games.
# Cricket: Three Pakistani players had been fined for confrontations with Proteas during Wednesday’s tri-nations match in Karachi. Shaheen Shah Afridi must pay 25-percent of his match fee after he was found guilty of inappropriate physical contact over his altercation with Matthew Breetzke. Saud Shakaal and Kamran Ghulan were fined 10-percent for celebrating too close to Temba Bavuma after the South African captain was run out. Pakistan won by six wickets and is playing New Zealand in the final of the short series today.
# Rugby: Wallabies scrumhalf Nic White hopes to face the touring British and Irish Lions this year after he was denied the opportunity 12 years ago. He was seen as one of Australia’s rising starts in 2013, but sustained a serious shoulder injury that left him on the sidelines. White says he feels the stars might be aligning for him this time. The Lions beat the Wallabies 2-1 in 2013 and are the favourite again this year after unimpressive displays by Australia in recent years.
# Motorsport: McLaren’s Lando Norris says he is determined to challenge for the drivers’ championship again this year, as the new Formula One season begins in Australia next month. The Brit helped McLaren to a first constructors’ crown since 1998 last year. However, he finished 63 points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who claimed his fourth successive drivers’ title. Norris says he needs to get his elbows out but also be smart in his battles with Verstappen:
# And finally, soccer: Host Saudi Arabia will uphold its ban on alcohol during 2034’s World Cup while welcoming members of the LGBTQ Plus community. The kingdom banned the use of alcohol in 1952. It was also not allowed during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although beer was available at designated zones and in some hotels. The Saudi ambassador to the United Kingdom, Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud, says plenty of fun can be had without alcohol. He also says everyone would be welcome since it’s a world event.
