Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have cricket: Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s bid for a third SA20 title remains on track. They beat Joburg Super Kings by 32 runs in their eliminator in Centurion. Captain Aiden Markram scored an unbeaten 62 as Sunrisers posted 184 for six. In reply, Super Kings finished on 152 for seven. Sunrisers will meet Paarl Royals in the second qualifier today for a place in Saturday’s final against MI Cape Town. Markram says they put on a near-complete performance:
# Rugby: Former Cheetahs lock and coach Rory Duncan had been appointed as new CEO of the union. The 47-year-old succeeds Ross van Reenen, whose three-year stint ended in November. Duncan played for the Cheetahs from 2006 until 2008 and also represented the Sharks, the EP Kings and a Japanese club. He coached the Free State team from 2014 until 2018 before becoming the coach of English club Worcester Warriors. Duncan plans to focus on the franchise’s long-term sustainability and strengthening their international participation.
More rugby news: Springbok winger Canan Moodie will play his 50th match for the Bulls in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship game against the Stormers in Cape Town. It’s the same city where he made his debut for the Pretoria side’s Currie Cup team against Western Province in 2022. The 22-year-old grew up in the Boland. The Bulls are currently third on the URC log after winning six of their eight previous matches, while the Stormers are 12th after losing five out of nine games.
# Golf: South Africa’s in-form Daniel van Tonder leads a strong field for the Cape Town Open, which teed off at the Royal Cape Golf Club today. His back-to-back wins on the Sunshine Tour in the past two weeks make him a firm contender. The field also includes former champions JC Ritchie of South Africa, Benjamin Follett-Smith of Zimbabwe, and Irishman Liam Nolan. Another South African, Martin Vorster, is hoping to build on his recent good form:
# And finally, motorsport: MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin has been ruled out of the remaining pre-season testing in Malaysia and will undergo surgery in Europe after crashing badly on the opening day at the Sepang track. The Spaniard broke his hand and foot after being thrown off his Aprilia machine at the Sepang circuit. He had emerged unscathed from a crash earlier in the day. He now faces a race against time to be fit for the start of his title defence in the season-opening Thai Grand Prix on 2 March.
