Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: South Africa defeated Pakistan by eleven runs in the first T20 at Kingsmead in Durban. David Miller scored 82 and George Linde 48 as the Proteas posted 183 for nine. In reply, Linde took four wickets for 21 runs, his best figures in T20, as Pakistan was restricted to 172 for eight. Linde says he is happy to be back in the team:
Meanwhile, Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt is back as the world’s number one one-day batter, replacing England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt. This follows her scores of 59, not out, and 35 in the first two ODIs against England in South Africa. Sciver-Brunt dropped to third in the rankings behind Chamari Athapaththu from Sri Lanka. Another South African, Chloé Tryon, moved up eight spots to joint 17th. Among the bowlers, Marizanne Kapp improved three places to sixth and also maintained her position as the best all-rounder.
# Swimming: Twenty-two-year-old Rebecca Meder shattered the long-standing African record in the 200-metre individual medley at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The South African finished sixth in the finals, clocking in a time of two-minutes-05.61-seconds. The previous record of two-minutes-06.13-seconds set by Zimbabwean Kirsty Coventry in 2008 had stood for over 16 years. Meanwhile, Ruard van Renen is through to the men’s 100-metre backstroke final after finishing fourth in his semifinal. Chad le Clos was unable to advance beyond the heats of the 50-metre butterfly.
# Rugby: La Rochelle’s coach, Ronan O’Gara, says he desperately wants to test himself on international level, but won’t be interesting in Wales who had lost their last 12 matches. The former Irish fly-half led the French team to back-to-back Champions Cup titles after being assistant coach for Racing 92 and the Crusaders. O’Gara says there are Test jobs he would love to have, but there are no other potential vacancies. Welsh coach Warren Gatland said earlier he would discuss his future in Cardiff with his family.
# And finally, golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler is the PGA Tour Player of the Year, joining Tiger Woods as the only player to win the honour in three consecutive years. The American received 91-percent of the vote. Scheffler has captured 13 career PGA Tour triumphs, seven of them this year. He became the first player to defend his title at The Players Championship as well as taking his second Masters crown in three seasons. The 28-year-old also won an Olympic gold in Paris.
