BULLETIN SPORTS NEWS 3 December 12:30 pm
Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have cricket: Victory in their remaining three Tests of the season will see the Proteas reach the final of the current World Test Championship. South Africa is currently in second position behind India after the 233-run victory over Sri Lanka in Durban. If they can win the second Test in Gqeberha, as well as the following two against Pakistan, they will qualify for the final, irrespective of other results. India, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England, and Pakistan can also still reach the final.
More cricket news: Cricket Australia has appointed Todd Greenberg as its new chief executive, the 15th person to lead the organisation since its establishment in 1982. Greenberg is the current CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association and former CEO of the National Rugby League. He will take over when Nick Hockley steps down in March. Greenberg says the rapid growth of the game globally creates fantastic opportunities, while also presenting some challenges to ensure Australian cricket retains its position at the very peak of the game.
# Rugby: Stormers director of rugby John Dobson says there is no pressure on his team before the start of the Champions Cup. They will play Toulon in Gqeberha on Saturday, followed by an away clash against Harlequins next weekend. The Stormers are currently 13th on the United Rugby Championship log after four losses in six outings, but Dobson believes they can turn things around. He points out they were without five Springboks against the Sharks, but still put on a great fight in their 15-21 loss.
# Roadrunning: The entry cap had been reached for next year’s 98th edition of the iconic Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal – nine days before the official cut-off date. More than 80 nations will be represented in the race, a down-run over approximately 89 kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on the eighth of June. The Comrades Marathon Association’s acting Race and Operations manager, Alain Dalais, says the race promises to be another memorable and challenging one.
# And finally, motorsport: Mexican Sergio Perez is reportedly set to lose his driver’s seat at Red Bull after this weekend’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The 34-year-old has scored only 152 of Red Bull’s 581 constructors points, and is 227 points behind his teammate, world champion Max Verstappen. According to reports, the contract extension Perez signed in June means he cannot be sacked outright, but can be moved into an ambassadorial role within Red Bull. RB drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson are the leading candidates to replace Perez.
