Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The Proteas Women play England in the second of three T20s in Benoni, Gauteng, this evening. The visitors won the first T20 in East London on Sunday by four wickets after restricting the hostesses to 142 for five and then reaching the target with four balls to spare. The final match will take place in Centurion on Saturday. The two countries will then play one-day matches in Kimberley, Durban and Potchefstroom, followed by a one-off Test in Bloemfontein from the 15th of next month.
More cricket news: The International Cricket Council will meet this week to determine the destiny of next year’s Champions Trophy tournament after India refused to play in host nation Pakistan. Earlier this month, the ICC informed the Pakistan Cricket Board that India would not visit Pakistan for the eight-team tournament, leaving the fate of the event hanging in the balance. The Pakistan Cricket Board has already rejected proposals that would allow India to play in a neutral country, insisting the full tournament must be staged on their turf.
# Rugby: Ireland will be without four players for Saturday’s Test against Australia in Dublin. Jamie Osborne and Jacob Stockdale sustained injuries during the 52-17 win over Fiji last Saturday. Ryan Baird suffered a head injury in the victory over Argentina earlier this month, while Tadhg Furlong has not featured at all this month due to a hamstring problem. Forwards coach Paul O’Connell says facing the Wallabies will be a massive challenge:
# Soccer: Manchester City threw away a three-goal lead to draw three-all against Feyenoord in their Champions League tie at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side is now on a run of six games without a win in all competitions. Arsenal got back to winning ways in the competition with a resounding five-one victory over Sporting. Robert Lewandowski became the third player to score 100 Champions League goals as Barcelona defeated Brest three-nil. There were also wins for AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Atalanta.
# And finally: Olympic Games: India has also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. This follows the news that a feasibility study, guided by the International Olympic Committee, will assess South Africa’s readiness to make a bid. The president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, who is a candidate to become president of the IOC, says he is delighted with India’s announcement. But he cautions the country that organising an Olympics was one of the world’s most complex projects.
