Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with soccer: Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis will be inducted into the South African Hall of Fame next Wednesday. She will be celebrated for her many achievements including leading the team to a historic Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022. Ellis will be honoured alongside the likes of former Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba, and legends Neil Tovey and Lucas Radebe. She has expressed gratitude for the honour, calling it a blessing.
# Cricket: The Proteas and India take on each other in the third T20 at SuperSport Park in Centurion tonight after sharing the spoils in the first two encounters. India won the first match in Durban by 61 runs, followed by South Africa’s victory by three wickets in Gqeberha. The final game takes place at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Friday. The change from the East Coast to the Highveld is described as travelling to an entirely different continent, with the pitches up north being described as more batter-friendly.
Meanwhile, former Proteas batter Neil McKenzie will fulfil the role of consultant coach for Sri Lanka ahead of their Test tour of South Africa. He will join the visitors from today for just over a week. The chief of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, Ashley de Silva, says McKenzie will bring in vital, in-depth insights about local conditions. The first Test starts at Kingsmead in Durban on the 27th, and the second one at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on the fifth of December.
# Rugby: Former Welsh scrumhalf Mike Phillips wants head coach Warren Gatland to be dismissed after this past weekend’s loss to Fiji – their tenth defeat in a row. The New Zealander returned to the role in December 2022 after coaching Wales from 2007 to 2019. Phillips played his 94 Tests for Wales between 2003 and 2015. He says Gatland is laughing all the way to the bank without being held accountable, and deserves to be kicked out like he did to so many quality Welsh players.
# And finally, golf: Austrian and Turkish Opens return to DP World Tour’s 2025 schedule, as does the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa. A minimum of 42 tournaments will take place across 26 countries over the year-round season. The European tour returns to Turkey for the first time since 2019 and to Austria for the first time since 2021. DP World Tour’s chief executive, Guy Kinnings, says the 2025 schedule once again demonstrates and celebrates the truly global nature of the tour.
