Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The All Blacks have lost two stalwarts before Friday’s Test against Ireland in Dublin. Flyhalf Beauden Barrett and hooker Codie Taylor both suffered concussions during Saturday’s narrow 24-22 victory over England at Twickenham. Head coach Scott Robertson called up Harry Plummer and Brodie McAlister as replacements from the All Blacks Fifteen squad currently touring the United Kingdom. The clash at the Aviva Stadium is touted as a revenge match for Ireland who lost to New Zealand in the quarterfinal of last year’s World Cup.
Meanwhile, England prop Joe Marler has called time on his international playing career. This is the second time he has retired having reversed his 2018 decision to step away from Test rugby. The 34-year-old, who made his England debut in 2012, has won 95 caps. He played in the 2015, ’19, and ’23 World Cups and was part of the three Six Nations-winning sides in 2016, ’17, and ’20. Marler says it is time for him to move on:
# Motorsport: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen produced a stunning comeback from an original starting position of 17th on the grid to win the rain-affected Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly finished second and third respectively to score a double podium for Alpine. Verstappen’s world championship rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris, who started on pole, finished sixth. He has now fallen 62 points adrift of the Dutchman with 86 points available in the final three races. Verstappen says this was an emotional win:
Meanwhile, the defending world champion, Francesco Bagnaia, kept alive his hopes of retaining his MotoGP title by winning the Malaysian Grand Prix. The Italian finished three seconds ahead of championship rival Jorge Martin, with Enea Bastianini in third. South Africa’s Brad Binder could not finish the race after being involved in a crash. The championship will be decided in the final race of the season later this month, with Martin holding a 24-point advantage. Bagnaia says he is enjoying the title race:
# And finally, road running: Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the men’s race at the New York City Marathon, his first world major title. The 35-year-old reached the finish line in two-hours-seven minutes-and-39 seconds, six seconds ahead of the 2022 men’s champion Kenya’s Evans Chebet. Albert Korir, also from Kenya, finished third. The women’s race was an all-Kenyan podium, with Sheila Chepkirui winning in two-hours-24-minutes-and-35-seconds, finishing 14 seconds ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot.
