# We start with netball: New Proteas head coach Jenny van Dyk says she is relishing the prospect of finally getting her tenure underway. Led by captain Khanyisa Chawane, South Africa is set to take on Malawi in a three-match series in Johannesburg from tomorrow until Sunday. # Soccer: African champions Banyana Banyana suffered a two-one defeat to European champions England in an international friendly in Coventry. First-half goals from captain Leah Williamson, who made her 50th appearance for the Lionesses, and Grace Clinton, secured the win for the hosts. Thembi Kgatlana scored the consolation goal for South Africa. This was the first meeting between the two sides since February 2010 in the Cyprus Cup tournament.
More soccer news: Arsenal’s former manager, Arsene Wenger, will lead a taskforce compiled by world governing body Fifa to probe the impact of the packed calendar on players’ welfare. This follows after top European leagues and players’ union Fifpro filed a legal complaint with the European Commission, accusing Fifa of abuse of its dominance over the calendar. The union was included in the taskforce. Fifa says it must examine how suitable and effective safeguards for players can be implemented.
# Rugby: Irish club Munster has announced the immediate departure of head coach Graham Rowntree. The former forward of England and Leicester Tigers led the team to the United Rugby Championship title in his first season in 2022/’23, but they are struggling this season. Munster is currently in 12th place on the log after winning only two of their first six games. The head of rugby operations, Ian Costello, will take over Rowntree’s duties while the club searches for a new permanent coach.
# And finally, tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy won’t take part in the Paris Masters. He was set to play his first match today, but announced yesterday an intestinal virus will keep him out of the tournament. Sinner is replaced by local qualifier Arthur Cazaux. He is already assured of the number one ranking at the end of the season. Sinner still plans to play in the ATP Finals in Turin in his home country and the Davis Cup Finals in Málaga, Spain, next month.
