Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Kagiso Rabada and Kyle Verreynne were South Africa’s heroes in their seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur. Verreyne directed the Proteas’ first innings lead of 202 runs with a quick-fire century after the hosts were bundled out for just 106. Rabada then took six wickets in Bangladesh’s second innings and they reached 307, setting the visitors a winning target of 106. South Africa reached that within 22 overs for the loss of three wickets. The second Test starts in Chattogram on Tuesday.
More cricket news: Zimbabwe smashed the world record for the highest score in a men’s T20 international match when they beat Gambia by 290 runs in their World Cup qualifier in Kenya. Zimbabwe amassed 344 for four, surpassing Nepal’s 314 for three against Mongolia in September last year. Zimbabwean captain Sikandar Raza contributed an undefeated 133 runs off just 43 balls. The biggest over was the 17th which yielded 35 runs. Zimbabwe hit 27 sixes and 30 fours in total. Gambia was then bowled out for a meagre 54.
# Rugby: Johan Grobbelaar and Wilco Louw have been called up to the Springbok squad for next month’s outgoing tour following the injury withdrawal of utility forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels. He suffered an ankle injury in the Bulls’ United Rugby Championship clash against Scarlets last Saturday. The inclusion of Grobbelaar and Louw increases the squad to 35 players, comprising 19 forwards and 16 backs. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus says he is excited to see the two make their mark against quality opposition in Scotland, England and Wales.
Meanwhile, the Bulls will again face Irish referee Eoghan Cross this weekend – the same man who gave centre David Kriel his marching orders with a red card in the United Rugby Championship match against Ospreys two weeks ago. It was rescinded later. The Pretoria team won that game despite the disruption, but a similar incident – this time against Springbok hooker Johan Grobbelaar in the match against Scarlets a week later – led to a one-point loss. The Bulls plays Benetton in Treviso tomorrow night.
# And tennis: Aryna Sabalenka can clinch the year-end number one world ranking in the group stage of the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia already. The Belarusian needs to win all three round-robin games to make sure of pipping Iga Swiatek from Poland to the post. Sabalenka overtook Swiatek on top of the rankings this week after Swiatek opted out of the WTA Tour’s Asian leg due to fatigue and the switching of her coach. The finals start in Riyadh on the second of next month.
