Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The Springbok Women will face Brazil in their first group D match of next year’s World Cup in England. The encounter in Northampton on the 24th of August will be followed by group games against Italy in York, and France, again in Northampton. The hostesses will open the tournament against the USA in Sunderland near Newcastle on the 22nd of August, and defending champions New Zealand will take on Spain in York two days later. The final will be played in London on 27 September.
Meanwhile, the All Blacks will have a new captain when they face Japan on Saturday. Lock Patrick Tuipulotu will lead the team in place of regular skipper Scott Barrett, who won’t travel to Yokohama. Damian McKenzie replaces Beauden Barrett at flyhalf along scrumhalf Cam Roigard, who will make his first appearance for the team this year. Former captain Sam Cane will start at loose forward in his 101st Test. New Zealand’s end-of-year tour also include matches against England, Ireland, France and Italy.
# Cricket: Defending champions the Lions beat the Titans by seven wickets to make Sunday’s final of the T20 Challenge. The Titans were bowled out for 115, with Nqaba Peter taking four wickets. In reply, Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen shared a second-wicket partnership of 92 as the Lions reached the target losing just three wickets. Today, North West Dragons take on Western Province in an eliminator, with the winner meeting the Titans in Friday’s second qualifier to determine who faces the Lions in the final.
More cricket news: South African-born New Zealander Chad Bowes broke the world record for the fastest double century in List A cricket when he reached 200 off just 103 balls. The Canterbury batter achieved the feat during a match against Otago in Christchurch, improving the previous record set by South Australian batter Travis Head against Queensland in 2021. Bowes lost his wicket for 205 off 110 balls, hitting seven sixes and 27 fours. The thirty-two-year-old had to be treated regularly for dehydration and a sore back.
# And finally: Tennis: Iga Swiatek from Poland confirmed her participation in next month’s Billie Jean King Cup in Málaga, Spain. She will also play in the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from the second of November. This will be her first tournament since the US Open in August, where she lost to local player Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinal. Swiatek then decided to miss the WTA Tour’s Asian leg due to fatigue, leading to her surrendering the top world ranking to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
