Good afternoon, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: The Bulls had a red card rescinded for the second week in a row. Italian referee Federico Vedovelli sent Springbok hooker Johan Grobbelaar off for a dangerous tackle during the Pretoria team’s 22-23 loss to Scarlets in Wales on Friday, but a United Rugby Championship disciplinary committee changed it to yellow. This followed after David Kriel’s red card was rescinded after he was penalised in the match against Ospreys the previous weekend. The Bulls take on Benetton in Treviso this coming weekend in the third match on tour.
More rugby: All Blacks centre David Havili says they will be wary of the Eddie Jones factor when they take on Japan in Yokohama on Saturday. The former Wallaby coach relocated eastwards after his disastrous tenure in Australia, who failed to reach the World Cup knock-out stage for the first time in history last year. Havili says they will look out for the Brave Blossoms’ flair and Jones’s innovative coaching. After this weekend, New Zealand goes to Europe for Tests against England, Ireland, France and Italy.
# Next up, cricket: A brilliant century by Kyle Verreyne led South Africa to a 202-run first-innings lead over Bangladesh on the second day of the first Test in Mirpur. Yesterday the Proteas bowled the hosts out for just 106, but the visitors lost their sixth wicket with a lead of only two runs. Verreyne, with the help of firstly Wiaan Mulder and then Dane Piedt, then took the score to 308 before he was stumped on 114. Mulder contributed 54 and Piedt 32, while Taijul Islam took five wickets.
More cricket: England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, will miss the upcoming one-day international series against the West Indies after suffering a setback in his recovery from a calf injury. He has not played a competitive match since the T20 World Cup in June. Buttler will join the squad in Barbados, hoping to play the five-match T20 series. All-rounder Liam Livingstone will captain the side in Buttler’s absence, while uncapped wicketkeeper Michael Pepper has been added to the ODI squad.
# Today we close with soccer: Head coach Mikel Arteta has urged Arsenal to use the pain of their first defeat in six months as motivation in today’s Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Gunners suffered a shock 2-0 loss at the hands of Bournemouth on Saturday. It meant they lost ground at the top of the Premier League and finished the weekend four points behind leaders Liverpool. But Arteta says there was no need to panic after a first defeat since April.
