Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt admits they were outplayed by New Zealand in yesterday’s Women’s T20 World Cup final in Dubai. The White Ferns won by 32 runs, inflicting a second successive defeat in a final on South Africa. New Zealand posted 158 for five in their 20 overs with Amelia Kerr top-scoring with 43. In reply, the Proteas were restricted to 126 for nine. Wolvaardt says they did not play their best cricket against a quality opponent:
Men’s cricket: South Africa bowled Bangladesh out for just 106 at the start of the first Test in Mirpur. The hosts won the toss and decided to bat first, but their first wicket already fell with just six runs on the board. Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj all took three wickets and the whole team was back in the pavilion within 41 overs.
Rabada today became the third-fastest South African to take 300 Test wickets after Dale Steyn and Allan Donald. The 29-year-old has also become the fastest bowler to take 300 Test wickets by balls bowled, reaching the feat in 11-thousand-817 deliveries. Rabada is ahead of Pakistan’s Waqar Younis, Steyn and Donald.
# Golf: South Africa’s Robin Williams successfully defended his Fortress Invitational title at Glendower Golf Club in Gauteng. He cruised to a three-stroke victory, shooting a five-under 67 to finish 22-under-par. Daniel van Tonder finished second on 19-under with Yurav Premlall and Keenan Davidse sharing third place on 15-under. Williams says he just tried to focus on what worked last year and did not think about the leaderboard:
# Motorsport: Charles Leclerc won the United States Grand Prix leading teammate Carlos Sainz to a dominant one-two for Ferrari. McLaren’s Lando Norris lost third place to title rival Red Bull’s Max Verstappen after receiving a five-second time penalty for overtaking outside of the track limits. Norris finished fourth ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri. Verstappen has extended his drivers’ championship lead over Norris to 57 points with five races left. Leclerc says it was a straightforward race for him:
# And finally, tennis: Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka’s season has come to an end. She pulled out of next month’s Billie Jean King Cup finals in Spain due to injury. The Japanese former world number one sustained a back injury during this month’s China Open before skipping the Japan Open and the Pan Pacific Open. Osaka is currently ranked 56th after returning from a maternity break this season. She hopes to get healthy in time for the ASB Classic in Auckland at the end of December.
