Good afternoon, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with cricket: Cricket: South Africa put on a dominant performance to beat defending champions Australia by eight wickets in Dubai, and reach the Women’s T20 World Cup final. Australia posted 134 for four. In reply, Anneke Bosch smashed an unbeaten 74, while captain Laura Wolvaardt added 42 in a second-wicket partnership of 96, as the Proteas reached the target with 16 balls to spare. Bosch says to defeat Australia in a T20 World Cup for the first time is amazing:
Other cricket news: The Dolphins welcome back local hero David Miller for their final home T20 Challenge clash against Boland at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban tomorrow. Miller will turn out for the hosts after his recent stint with the Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League. The 35-year-old says he is eager to represent his home union again. The Dolphins have won their last two matches, including a good victory over the Knights in Bloemfontein on Wednesday night, and still have an outside chance of making the semi-final.
# Now for some rugby: Bulls director of rugby, Jake White says he feels vindicated after centre David Kriel’s red card in the United Rugby Championship match against Ospreys was rescinded. Kriel was given his marching orders by referee Eoghan Cross after extending his arm to try and fend off a defender, but the competition’s disciplinary committee found the red card wasn’t warranted and cancelled it. White praised the URC and its disciplinary process, but explains the decision wasn’t an indictment on the officials.
More rugby news: The Springbok Women are in Pool D alongside France, Italy and Brazil, for the Rugby World Cup in England next year. South Africa played France in the opening game of the last Rugby World Cup in Auckland, and Italy last weekend in the final match of the Women’s Fifteen in Cape Town, but are yet to face Brazil in a Test. Hosts England have been drawn with Australia, USA, and Samoa, while defending champions New Zealand will face Ireland, Japan and Spain.
# And finally, tennis: Serbia’s Novak Djokovic will play Spain’s Rafael Nadal for the last time in the third-place play-off in the Six Kings Slam exhibition event in Saudi Arabia tomorrow. Djokovic lost to Italian Jannik Sinner, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, while Nadal, who will retire after the Davis Cup Finals in Málaga next month, lost 6-3, 6-3 to compatriot Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic and Nadal have met 60 times on the ATP Tour, including Grand Slams, with the Serb leading the head-to-head 31-29 and has 24 Grand Slam titles to Nadal’s 22.
