Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with cricket: It was a bad day in the office for the Proteas’ women’s and men’s team. England defeated South Africa by seven wickets in their Women’s T20 World Cup Group B match in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The Proteas posted 124 for six and England reached the targets in their final over.
Ireland defeated the Protea men by 69 runs in the third and final one-day international in Abu Dhabi, with the Proteas winning the series two-one. Captain Paul Stirling scored 88 as Ireland posted 284 for nine, and South Africa was then bowled out for 215.
Meanwhile, Proteas captain Temba Bavuma’s injury may keep him out of the two-Test tour of Bangladesh, starting on the 21st. He injured his arm during the second one-day match against Ireland and missed yesterday’s final game when Rassie van der Dussen led the team. This is the same problem that kept Bavuma on the sidelines for a lengthy period two years ago. The players are returning home from the United Arab Emirates today and Bavuma will then consult a specialist.
# Rugby: Bulls director of rugby Jake White plans to use Springbok utility back Canan Moodie increasingly at centre in this season’s United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup. He played at outside centre, paired with David Kriel, when the Pretoria team convincingly beat Ulster 47-21 at Loftus on Saturday. White says the number 13 jersey is probably the 21-year-old’s long-term future, praising his versatility. He says it’s incredible for such a young player to be able to play 13, 14 and 15.
# Soccer: Title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt will face Orlando Pirates of South Africa after both were placed in Group C in the CAF Champions League group-stage draw. Chabab Belouizdad of Algeria and Stade Abidjan of the Ivory Coast complete the group. Ahly and Pirates met in the 2013 Champions League final with the Egyptians winning 2-0 in Cairo after drawing 1-1 in Soweto. Semi-finalists in the last two editions, Mamelodi Sundowns, face Moroccan clubs Raja Casablanca and FAR Rabat, and Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group B.
# And finally, tennis: Denmark’s Holger Rune came from behind to defeat Italian Matteo Berrettini, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and reach the third round of the Shanghai Masters. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was delayed by persistent rain. Italian Flavio Cobolli beat Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in three sets to set up a third-round meeting with record-four-time champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia. American Taylor Fritz and Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov also won their second-round matches.
