Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The Proteas’ Test tour of Bangladesh will go ahead this month after a security assessment was conducted following political unrest in the South Asian country. The two teams will take on each other in two Tests, the first one taking place in Dhaka from the 21st, and the second in Chattogram from the 29th. The women’s T20 World Cup, starting on Thursday, had been moved to the United Arab Emirates after prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s government was ousted in August.
Meanwhile, two South African match officials will be involved in the women’s T20 World Cup. Lauren Agenbag was announced as an on-field umpire, and Shandré Fritz as match referee in the elite all-female panel. Bangladesh and Scotland will open the action in Sharjah, followed by the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka on the same field. South Africa will take on the Windies on Friday. The final will be played in Dubai on the 20th of this month.
# Tennis: Local wildcard Bu Yunchaokete is playing world number one, Italian Jannik Sinner, in the semifinal of the China Open in Beijing today. The 22-year-old Bu yesterday stunned world number six Andrey Rublev of Russia in straight sets after previously also getting rid of world number 19, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy. Sinner succeeded in beating Czech player Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. He or Bu will play for the title against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, who beat Russian Daniil Medvedev in the other semifinal.
# Motorsport: French manufacturer Renault has announced it will end its Formula One engine programme after the 2025 season. The decision comes ahead of the introduction of new engine regulations to F1 in 2026. This means Renault’s Alpine team will have to buy engines from another manufacturer, with reports that it is expected to agree to a deal to have their power units supplied by Mercedes. Alpine is ninth out of ten teams in the Constructors’ Championship with just six races remaining.
# And finally, soccer: Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o has been banned for six months from attending all of the national men’s and women’s matches for offensive behaviour and misconduct. The sanction is connected to the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup round of 16 match between Cameroon and Brazil last month. The former Barcelona and Chelsea striker was found guilty of offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play and misconduct of players and officials. Fifa has not disclosed the specific details of Eto’o’s actions.
