Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have rugby: The Springboks want to celebrate Eben Etzebeth’s special milestone by beating Argentina in Mbombela tomorrow and clinching the Rugby Championship title. The lock will make history by becoming South Africa’s most capped player, surpassing Victor Matfield’s record of 127 Tests. Hooker Bongi Mbonambi, who had played against or with Etzebeth since junior level, describes him as a very respected team member. Coach Rassie Erasmus says the Boks want to pay him back, while assistant coach Daan Human describes him as the most coachable player in the squad.
Meanwhile, Argentinia still has a mathematical chance to clinch the title. But they need a bonus point victory over the four-time world champions, and deprive South Africa of any log points. Pumas head coach Felipe Contepomi has made seven changes to the team that stunned the Boks in Argentina last week. Among the changes are Santiago Grondona replacing injured flanker Marcos Kremer, and imposing lock Tomas Lavanini returning to the starting team.
# Swimming: Chad le Clos, Rebecca Meder and Ruard van Renen have qualified for the world short course championships in Budapest, Hungary, in December. Le Clos won the 50-metre butterfly in 22.40-seconds and the 100-metre freestyle in 46.91-seconds at the SA short course championships in Durban. Van Renen finished second in the 100-metre freestyle in 47.02-second, also below the qualifying time. Meder sprung a surprise by claiming victory in the 100-metre breaststroke, an event that’s not her speciality, and the 100-metre individual medley.
# Golf: Team USA made a dominant start to the Presidents Cup in Montreal, Canada, winning all five matches in round one against the International Team. World number one Scottie Scheffler and playing partner Russell Henley led from the front for Team USA, delivering the day’s most comprehensive win, beating South Korean pair Tom Kim and Sungjae Im. Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Patrick Cantlay also delivered for America. Team USA is attempting to win the Presidents Cup for a tenth successive time.
# And finally, motorsport: Formula One team Red Bull has dropped Australian Daniel Ricciardo with immediate effect and replaced him with New Zealander Liam Lawson for the season’s final six races. Ricciardo has more often than not been outperformed by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda this year. Lawson came in for five races last season after Ricciardo broke his wrist in a crash at the Dutch Grand Prix. In his F1 career, Ricciardo has claimed eight victories in 257 Grand Prix starts across 14 seasons.
