Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says he is expecting a stern test against Argentina in their Rugby Championship clash in Santiago del Estero on Saturday. The Boks can seal their first Championship title since 2019 by beating Los Pumas, the only other team in the running for the title. The Springboks are the only unbeaten team in the competition. Erasmus says not much separates the two teams, but it will come down to preparation and who pitches up the best on the day:
Meanwhile, Argentina will be without experienced centre Matías Orlando in Saturday’s clash. The 32-year-old, who has yet to feature in this year’s competition, is struggling with a muscular injury. Head coach Felipe Contepomi has called up 21-year-old uncapped wing Santiago Pernas as Orlando’s replacement. Pernas was outstanding in Super Rugby Americas and was named as the best back of the season in the league.
And in more rugby news: The All Blacks prop Fletcher Newell is set to miss both of this month’s Bledisloe Cup Tests against Australia because of a calf injury. He will definitely sit out Saturday’s match in Sydney, and will be reassessed ahead of the return fixture in Wellington on 28 September. New Zealand Rugby says the 24-year-old Newell suffered the injury late in their match against the Springboks in Cape Town, which South Africa won 18-12.
# Golf: South Africans Jean Hugo and Ruan Korb finished on 20 under par with a closing 63 to win the Ubunye Championship at the Pretoria Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate. The tournament saw Sunshine Tour professionals competing in a team format. The teams of Trevor Fisher Junior and Stefan Wears-Taylor, and Jaco Ahlers and Michael Hollick, finished tied second on 16 under par. Hugo says he had Korb had a good balance:
# And finally tennis: Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime sealed 2022 champions Canada’s place in this year’s Davis Cup finals in Malaga in November. Shapovalov moved past Daniel Evans 6-0, 7-5, to give Canada a one-nil lead in its Group D tie. Auger-Aliassime beat US Open semifinalist Jack Draper, 7-6, 7-5. The British won the final doubles to make it two-one but it was not enough to guide them into the finals. Other countries that have made the finals are reigning champions Italy, Spain, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Australia and Argentina.
