Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: SA Rugby has officially appointed former Springbok Sevens captain Phillip Snyman as head coach of the Blitzboks until the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. He took charge of the team on an interim basis for the last six months. Under his guidance, the Blitzboks won the bronze medal at the Games in Paris. SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer says the way Snyman turned around the fortunes of the Blitzboks in a short time speaks volumes about his abilities as a coach.
# Golf: South Africa’s Daniel van Tonder is teaming up with Malcolm Mitchell for the Ubunye Championship at Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate in Pretoria from today. The tournament sees Sunshine Tour professionals compete in a team format. Van Tonder is in great form with two Sunshine Tour victories in August alone. Young star Yurav Premlall, who has Ryan van Velzen as his partner, says he is finding his confidence again after finishing second to Van Tonder at both of his victories:
# Cricket: England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, will tour Pakistan with his team next month after a hamstring tear kept him out of the recent series against Sri Lanka. He is still continuing his recovery, together with Zak Crawley, who fractured a finger in July. Eight players remain from the squad that beat Pakistan 3-nil in 2022. The two countries will face each other in three Tests from the seventh of October. Stokes also committed to M-I Cape Town in next year’s third edition of the SA20.
# Motorsport: McLaren’s Formula One team principal, Andrea Stella, says any action taken to back Lando Norris in the race for the drivers’ championship will only happen within the team’s principles of sportsmanship and fairness. The team will prioritise Norris over Oscar Piastri as they bid to win the drivers’ as well as the constructor championships. Norris heads into this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix 62 points behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Former world champion Nico Rosberg says this is all new for McLaren:
# And, hockey: The Australian governing body has banned an Olympic player for 12 months after he tried to buy cocaine during the Games in Paris. Tom Craig was arrested by French police and released without charge later. The 29-year-old was a member of Australia’s team that won silver at the Tokyo Olympics, but the team couldn’t win a medal in Paris. Hockey Australia suspended half of the ban. Craig, who already played over 100 matches for his country, will still be eligible to play for Australia next year.
