Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expects a tough game against hosts South Sudan in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Juba National Stadium this afternoon. South Africa played to a two-all draw with Uganda in the opening match of their campaign at Orlando Stadium in Soweto last Friday. Broos says they will need to rectify the mistakes they made against Uganda to stand a chance of winning today:
# On to rugby: Head coach Scott Robertson expects difficult questions back home after the All Blacks’ failed visit to South Africa. The once feared team lost four matches in a row to the Springboks, leaving them in an unprecedented third place on the Rugby Championship log. The Kiwis also unexpectedly lost to Argentina in their first match in the competition. Robertson says Saturday’s Test in Cape Town was a fantastic match. He congratulated the world champions, saying they know how to get the job done.
# Tennis: Jessica Pegula replaced Coco Gauff as the United States’ best female player after reaching the final of the US Open, where she lost to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka. Pegula is now world number three after Iga Swiatek of Poland and Sabalenka, while Gauff slumped to sixth. Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan remains in fourth, Italian Jasmine Paolini in fifth and China’s Zheng Qinwen in seventh. American Emma Navarro improved four places to eighth. Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic and Greece’s Maria Sakkari complete the top ten.
# Motorsport: McLaren Formula One team principal Andrea Stella says they need to capitalise more on the competitiveness of the car. McLaren’s Lando Norris has reduced Red Bull Max Verstappen’s drivers’ championship lead to 62 points, while Red Bull’s advantage over McLaren in the constructors’ standings is eight points. Stella says Ferrari’s return to form is good as having more cars taking points away from Red Bull can be a positive for his team. After this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, there will only be seven more races left this season.
# And finally, the World Anti-Doping Agency has renewed its call for the US Anti-Doping Agency to better protect clean sport. Thirty-two national and regional anti-doping organisations from Europe, Asia, and Africa raised concerns that the US is sending athletes to major events without being sufficiently tested in advance. According to Wada, 90-percent of all athletes in America compete outside the protection of the anti-doping code. Usada says Wada was trying to deflect from their failure to do their job as the global regulator.
