# We start with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will only announce his squad for Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks in Cape Town on Thursday, and not today as usual. Pundits are contemplating if this is a ploy to keep New Zealand guessing, or whether they are not sure over some selections. There is uncertainty over captain Siya Kolisi and winger Kurt-Lee Arendse, who were both injured during the first Test at Ellis Park. Scrum coach Daan Human says all the other players are fit.
Meanhwiile, New Zealand forwards coach Jason Ryan says they want to build on the positive aspects of the first Test heading into the second game in Cape Town after losing 27-31 at Ellis Park. Ryan says the drop in intensity and lack of scoring in the final quarter of the first game are issues they are looking at:
# On to cricket: The Wanderers in Johannesburg will again host the final of the SA20 next year. It will be played in the Bullring on the eighth of February. The third season will kick off at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on 9 January, when two-time champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, will host M-I Cape Town, who boasts the services of England captain Ben Stokes. SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith says season three is set to be bigger and better, and promises an action-packed summer of cricket.
# Tennis: World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy has set up a US Open quarterfinal clash with Russian Daniil Medvedev. Sinner defeated American Tommy Paul in straight sets while Medvedev, the only former champion left in the draw, cruised past Nuno Borges of Portugal. Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Britain’s Jack Draper are also through to the quarterfinals. In the women’s draw, world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova to set up a quarterfinal clash with American sixth seed Jessica Pegula.
# And finally, golf: Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy says he is aiming to cut back on his tournament schedule in future. By the end of the year, the 35-year-old Northern Irishman will have competed in 27 events. The former world number one has won twice on the PGA Tour this season, but failed to register the elusive fifth major victory. McIlroy says he is going to try to cut his events to 18 or 20 a year
