Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with swimming: Twenty-one-year-old Pieter Coetzé won silver in the 50-metre backstroke at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, to finish the competition with three medals. He also secured gold in the 100-metre backstroke and silver in the 200-metre backstroke. The South African recorded another African record time of 24.17-seconds to share the silver with Russian Pavel Samusenko, behind Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov. Coetzé is the second South African, after Roland Schoeman, to win a treble of medals at a world championship.
# Rugby: British and Irish Lions CEO, Ben Calveley, has suggested that Andy Farrell is in pole position to lead the team again when they tour New Zealand in 2029. The 50-year-old steered the Lions to their first series triumph since 2013, but missed out on a whitewash when the Wallabies clinched a 22-12 victory in the final Test in Sydney on Saturday. Calveley says Farrell‘s impressive track record with the Lions will come into consideration when they begin the robust process to select a head coach.
# Motorsport: Lando Norris held off teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Hungarian Grand Prix as McLaren claimed another one-two of the season. Mercedes’ George Russell finished third, while pole-sitter Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc had to settle for fourth, with Fernando Alonso in fifth place for Aston Martin. Norris, who has reduced Piastri’s drivers’ championship lead to nine points going into the Formula One summer break, says he still has a lot to work on:
# Soccer: Inter Miami says captain Lionel Messi will be sidelined indefinitely after suffering a minor muscle injury in his right leg. The 38-year-old Argentine sustained the injury during a Leagues Cup match against Mexico’s Necaxa in Florida on Saturday. The match ended in a 2-all draw. The club says Messi’s medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment. Messi shares the Major League Soccer season lead with 18 goals and also has nine assists in 18 matches.
# And finally, tennis: Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek of Poland has become the latest seed to be knocked out of the Canadian Open in Montreal. The second seed was stunned by 19th-ranked Dane, Clara Tauson. American Madison Keys advanced to her eighth quarterfinal of the season with victory over Czech Karolina Muchova. In the men’s tournament in Toronto, Taylor Fritz battled past Czech Jiri Lehecka, while Denmark’s Holger Rune suffered a surprise exit as he was beaten by Australian Alexei Popyrin.
