Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus doesn’t believe foul play was the cause of the one red and five yellow cards his players received in their previous three Tests, saying most of the infringements were the result of poor technique. He denies the cards were shown for a lack of discipline, and isn’t concerned over the issue before Saturday’s second Rugby Championship Test against Australia in Perth. Erasmus says they have worked on the technical issues and hopefully will get it right this weekend.
Meanwhile, All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has made four changes to the starting side to face Argentina in the second Test at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday. He has responded to the upset 38-30 loss to the Pumas last weekend, by changing three backs and one forward. Will Jordan, Caleb Clarke, Rieko Ioane and Tamaiti Williams are in the starting line-up while Sam Cane has been recalled to the bench. Robertson says they need to cut down on errors:
# Olympic Games: Eighteen-year-old Bayanda Walaza has thanked his schoolmates at Curro Hazeldean High School in Pretoria for supporting him as he chased his dream in Paris. He won a silver medal in the four-by-100-metre relay. Walaza is the youngest athlete from South Africa to win an Olympic medal since the country’s re-admission into international sport in 1992. At a welcoming ceremony at his school, he acknowledged that the encouragement he got from teachers and learners was amazing:
# Cricket: South Africa’s star player in this year’s Under 19 World Cup, Kwena Maphaka, could make his senior international debut in the three-match T20 series against the West Indies. Maphaka took 21 wickets for the Under 19s during the tournament. The fast bowler was included in the squad for the series, starting in the Caribbean later this month, while 29-year-old Dolphins allrounder Jason Smith also received his maiden call-up to the Proteas. Smith plays for Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20.
# And finally, Netball: Khanyisa Chawane is the new captain of the Proteas with Karla Pretorius as the vice-captain. Chawane takes over the leadership role from Bongi Msomi, who retired after last year’s World Cup, having led the team since 2016. The Proteas assembled for a camp yesterday to prepare for the season ahead. Netball South Africa says Chawane is a seasoned player, bringing a wealth of experience and skills to her new role. She is excited to take on this new challenge:
