Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Olympic Games: Parliament’s portfolio committee on Sports, Arts and Culture has noted with appreciation the commendable performance of Team South Africa in Paris. The committee’s chairperson, Joe McGluwa, says it is sport that brought the country together. McCluwa also admits there is still much to be done to ensure that athletes receive the necessary support to ensure and to better the number of Olympic medals:
Team USA finished the Paris Games top of the medal table after the women’s basketball team beat hosts France 67-66 to win the final gold on offer. America won 126 medals consisting of 40 gold, 44 silver, and 42 bronze. China finished second with 91 medals including 40 gold, with Great Britain, France, and Australia rounding out the top five. South Africa ended the Games with six medals, one gold medal, three silvers and two bronze. The Paralympic Games get underway on the 28th of this month.
And, USA Gymnastics has launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after Jordan Chiles was stripped of the bronze medal she won in the women’s floor final in Paris. This comes after CAS ruled in favour of an appeal by Romania’s Ana Barbosu. The court says the initial inquiry made by the USA over Chiles’ score in the final was filed after the one-minute deadline. USA Gymnastics says they have video evidence that the appeal was done 13 seconds before the deadline.
# Now on to cricket: Rain and an impressive batting performance from Alick Athinaze denied South Africa victory on the final day of the first Test against the West Indies in Trinidad. The Proteas declared their second innings on 173 for three, setting the home side a target of 298 to win. Twenty-five-year-old Athanaze scored a career-best 92 and shared a fifth-wicket partnership of 65 with Jason Holder to draw the match. This is the first drawn Test worldwide in 28 matches, since July last year. The second Test starts in Guyana on Thursday.
# And finally, golf: LIV Golf has suspended and fined Graeme McDowell for one tournament for using a decongestant medicine that included a banned substance. He says after struggling with severe congestion that was affecting his sleep, he used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant without realising it might be on the banned list. The 2010 US Open winner says he deeply regrets this oversight. McDowell will miss this week’s event in West Virginia and is eligible to return to competition in Chicago next month.
