Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus could name an unchanged starting-15 for the second Test against Ireland in Durban on Saturday, but Ireland’s coach, Andy Farrell, doesn’t have the same luxury. Scrumhalf Nathan Doak and hooker Dave Heffernan have joined the injury-hit Ireland squad after injuries to Craig Casey and Dan Sheehan ruled them out of the match. Prop Andrew Porter is set to start despite suffering a cut to his hand. Centres Robbie Henshaw and Bundee Aki, winger James Lowe and full-back Jamie Osborne face fitness tests.
More news about the sport is that the Junior Springboks failed to reach the semifinals of the World Rugby Under20 Championships when they went down 17-12 to England in Cape Town. South Africa needed to win with a try-scoring bonus point and a points difference of at least 13 to progress to the final four. Now they will face Argentina in the fifth-place playoff on Sunday. The semifinals will see England take on Ireland while New Zealand faces France.
# Cricket: India eased to a ten-wicket win over South Africa in the third and final Women’s T20 in Chennai to end the series one-all. Indian seamer Pooja Vastrakar claimed four wickets as the Proteas were dismissed for 84. In reply, Smriti Mandhana scored an unbeaten 54 as the hosts reached the target in 10.5 overs, surpassing its previous best win in 54 balls in 2021 against South Africa. The Proteas will now turn their attention to the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in October.
# Soccer: Spain will face either England or the Netherlands in the final of the European Championship in Germany on Sunday. Spain came from behind with goals from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo to beat France two-one in Munich. Yamal became the youngest-ever player to score at a European Championship. Spain has reached the final having been the best side at these Euros, winning all six of their games and scoring a tournament-high 13 goals.
# And, tennis: Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of Wimbledon. Alcaraz rallied from a set down to beat American Tommy Paul in four sets, while Medvedev knocked out world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy in five sets. In the women’s draw, Jasmine Paolini is the first Italian woman in the open era to reach Wimbledon’s semifinals after beating American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-1. She will face Croatia’s Donna Vekic, who defeated New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun.
