Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with Olympics: With the Paris Olympics fast approaching, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee announced 81 additional names across nine sporting codes for next month’s multi-sporting event. Last month, Team SA confirmed an initial 39 athletes which included disciplines like aquatics, surfing, and sport climbing. South Africa is looking to compete in 17 of the 32 Olympic sports on offer. Sascoc earlier announced a 400-thousand-rand incentive for gold medallists 200-thousand-rand for silver, and 100-thousand-rand for bronze. It has now confirmed further financial incentives for medallists competing in team sports.
# Cricket: Pat Cummins claimed a hat-trick and David Warner thrashed a quick-fire 53 not out as Australia beat Bangladesh by 28 runs in a weather-disrupted T20 World Cup Super Eight clash in Antigua yesterday. Australia, who are bidding to complete a historic treble of World Test Championship, ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup titles, were awarded the victory under the Duckworth-Lewis formula when rain stopped play. The match between England and South Africa starts at half past four this afternoon.
# Rugby: The South African Rugby Union reported a small deficit of 6.8-million-rand before tax in 2023 because of significant game-related expenditure. It says last year was an extraordinarily challenging financial year. CEO Rian Oberholzer says the result was a major achievement against a global rugby landscape in which many other national unions had reported significant losses. A sizeable 38-percent of annual revenue of 1.35-billion-rand was spent on the investment in participating in the United Rugby Championship and European Club Rugby competitions and the ultimately successful Rugby World Cup campaign.
And, in more Rugby news, Francois Davids was re-elected as the deputy president of the South African Rugby Union at the Union’s Annual Meeting in Cape Town. He will serve a four-year term. Davids was opposed by former president of the Free State Rugby Union, Jerry Segwaba. Two positions on the Executive Council were also contested. Jannie Louw was re-elected for a second term and Adv. Willie Small was elected as a new member for a four-year term.
# And finally, Tennis: Wimbledon champion and world number two, 21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, says losing is part of life. The Spaniard suffered a shock defeat against Britain’s Jack Draper in the last 16 of the Queen’s Club tournament in London on Thursday. Alcaraz, also the reigning Queen’s champion, lost 7-6 and 6-3, with the British number one claiming the biggest win of his career. The 22-year-old Draper is bidding to become the first British men’s singles champion at Queen’s since Andy Murray won his fifth title at the event in 2016.
