Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with athletics: The Commission for Gender Equality is calling on countries and activists to rally behind Caster Semenya in an endeavour to seek justice not only for herself but other affected athletes. The European Court of Human Rights is today set to make its final decision on Semenya’s legal battle over testosterone regulations. The double Olympic 800 metres champion is challenging the requirement to lower her testosterone levels to compete. The commission says a favourable outcome will be of importance to athletes with differences in sexual development worldwide.
# Rugby: The Bulls are in third place on the log in the United Rugby Championship and on track to host a quarterfinal. They have two games remaining to not only secure their position, but hopefully climb even higher. The Bulls will host Italian side Benetton on Saturday before travelling to Durban to face the Sharks in their final game before the knockouts. Prop Wilco Louw says the Bulls must maintain their focus to beat Benetton:
# Cricket: Delhi Capitals ended the group stage of the Indian Premier League with a 19-run win over Lucknow Super Giants, to keep themselves in contention for a top-four finish, even if only mathematically. The Capitals made 208 for four, with half-centuries for Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel. In reply, the Super Giants were restricted to 189 for nine, with three wickets for Ishant Sharma. Stubbs says it was not the easiest surface to bat on:
More cricket news: Two experienced players were left out when the Netherlands’ squad was announced for next month’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States. The selectors replaced South African-born Roelof van der Merwe and Colin Ackerman with younger players Tim Pringle and Michael Levitt. Levitt impressed with a quick-fire century against Namibia in February. Wicketkeeper Scott Edwards remains in his role as regular captain. The Dutch will play the Proteas, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal in their group matches.
# And finally, soccer: Manchester City took a huge step towards a record fourth consecutive Premier League title when beating Tottenham Hotspur two-nil. Erling Haaland’s second-half double secured the win and moved Pep Guardiola’s side two points above Arsenal. City will lift the trophy again if they beat West Ham United on Sunday. Tottenham, meanwhile are now out of contention for a Champions League place. Guardiola says his players know it’s not done yet:
