Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Firstly, golf: South African Louis Oosthuizen has turned down a special invitation to the 106th PGA Championship due to an undisclosed personal commitment. He was among the LIV Golf players who received a special invitation to be part of the field at Valhalla in Louisville, Kentucky, next week. The Saudi-backed LIV will be represented by 16 players, including defending champion Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson.
# Rugby: English Test flanker Tom Curry could return to action for Sale Sharks in Friday’s Premiership match against Leicester Tigers after undergoing a hip operation in November. He last played in the World Cup, where he controversially accused Springbok hooker Bongi Mbonambi of racism after his country was ousted by the eventual champions in the semifinal. Curry used the facilities of soccer team Manchester United to aid his recovery, including a treadmill that changes the effect of gravity while running.
# Cycling: Two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard hopes to be fit in time for the Tour de France. The Dane sustained serious injuries in a crash during last month’s Tour of the Basque Country in Spain. He says he was finally able to ride outside again. The gruelling race will start in Florence, Italy, on the 29th of June and ends in Nice on the French Riviera on 21 July – the first time it won’t finish in the French capital of Paris, due to the Olympic Games.
# Motorsport: US House Judiciary Committee chairperson, Jim Jordan, has launched an investigation into Formula One’s rejection of Andretti Cadillac’s bid to join the grid in 2025 or 2026. The bid, headed by former McLaren driver Michael Andretti was rejected in January. F1, as the sport’s commercial rights holder, said the presence of an eleventh team on the grid would not, on its own, provide value to the Championship. Jordan says he wants answers to ensure that no illegal anti-competitive behaviour took place.
# And, Argentina soccer legend Diego Maradona’s Golden Ball trophy from the 1986 World Cup will be auctioned off next month. The award, believed to have been stolen, resurfaced in 2016 among other lots that were acquired from a private collection at auction in Paris. Maradona, who died in 2020, won the award after leading Argentina to a World Cup victory in Mexico, where he scored five goals in the tournament. This is the first Golden Ball to go for auction.
