# Springbok captain Siya Kolisi won Sports Star of the Year and People’s Choice Athlete of the Year at the South African Sports Awards held in North West. His teammates Eben Etzebeth won Sportsman of the Year and Manie Libbok Newcomer of the Year. Former Bok coach Jacques Nienaber won Coach of the Year, with the Springboks named Team of the Year. Other winners include sailor Kirsten Neuschäfer who won Sports Woman of the Year and sprint and long jump athlete Mpumelelo Mhlongo won Sportsman of the Year With a Disability.
# Athletics: South Africa’s four by 400 meters relay team qualified for the Olympic Games during the World Relay Championships in the Bahamas that were dominated by America. The United States won four out of the five gold medals on offer. Wayde van Niekerk helped South Africa to win silver in their item, aided by Gardeo Isaacs, Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay. Botswana clinched gold after the Americans were disqualified, and Belgium finished third. The US won the men’s 100 relay, the women’s 100 and 400, and the mixed 400.

# Motorsport: McLaren’s Lando Norris claimed the first victory of his Formula One career by winning the Miami Grand Prix. The Briton took the lead with 25 laps to go after making a pit stop under the safety car, while others had already stopped. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc third. Twenty-four-year-old Norris, who has the most podium finishes without a win in his sixth season of F1, says he is happy to have won finally:
# And finally, cricket: Sri Lanka joined Scotland as the two teams to book the last spots in the Women’s T20 World Cup from the qualifier tournament in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka recorded a hard-fought 15-run win over the United Arab Emirates in the qualifier semifinal. Scotland beat Ireland by eight wickets to qualify for their first T20 World Cup. The tournament will be held in Bangladesh in October, where Australia will aim for a record seventh title.
