Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus realises the group he picked for next weekend’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina in Santiago will be tested greatly. He expects a massive encounter in front of a hostile crowd, with the championship title on the line. South Africa needs three more points, while the Pumas need maximum points from the two encounters against the Boks to be crowned champions for the first time. Erasmus rested some first-choice players, saying others must get game-time in the built-up to the next World Cup.
More rugby news: Bulls coach Jake White says his team is probably as close as they have ever been to getting the balance right between youth and experience in the squad. They missed out on the United Rugby Championship title last season, losing to the Glasgow Warriors. White says he is hoping the experience gained will help his team in the playoff stages of the championship:
# Soccer: A goal in stoppage time gave Bafana Bafana a crucial 3-2 win against South Sudan in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Juba. Bafana coach Hugo Broos was not satisfied with the performance and felt his team could have wrapped up the game in the first half. However, he was happy to walk away with three points from an away game:
More soccer news: Former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been appointed as head coach of the USA men’s national team. The 52-year-old replaces Gregg Berhalter, who was sacked in July. The Argentinian will lead the country into the 2026 World Cup when the tournament is played across America, Canada and Mexico. US Soccer’s sporting director, Matt Crocker, says Pochettino is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development:
# And cricket: England captain Jos Buttler will miss at least the three-match T20 series against Australia starting in Southampton today. He is nursing a calf injury and the team will be led by Phil Salt. Buttler is also a doubt for the one-day internationals, and Harry Brook is expected to take over as captain if he isn’t fit. The second T20 will be played in Cardiff on Friday and the final one in Manchester on Sunday, followed by the five ODI’s from next Thursday until the 29th.
