ELECTION BULLETIN 29 May 9 pm
Good evening. I am……..
In this special election bulletin:
# The Election Commission is experiencing a surge in late voters at voting stations
# The commission is unsure when the first set of results will start coming in
# And the police resolve the fighting among party supporters at the Jabulani Hostel in Soweto
# The Electoral Commission says it is pleased that it has been able to overcome most glitches reported earlier in the day allowing voting to continue timeously. The IEC is currently processing a large number of voters in particular in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape. IEC CEO, Sy Mamabolo, says they have implemented measures to increase the processing of voters in busy areas:
Meanwhile, Mamabolo says it is tough to say when the first results might start coming in, due to the huge voter turnout and the three ballots that must be counted. He says in the past results started to come in at around one in the morning, but emphasises that this will not be the case this time around. Mamabolo explains the counting process that will begin after voting has been completed:
# And finally: The Gauteng Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure says it has managed to resolve a fight among party supporters at Jabulani Hostel in Soweto. Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili, says the supporters under the influence of alcohol were fighting among themselves near the voting station and verbally abused Electoral Commission and law enforcement officials. Muridili says the Public Order Police was called for reinforcement and no case has been registered.
