# President Cyril Ramaphosa says BRICS countries must strengthen economic cooperation and move beyond simply trading raw commodities. Speaking at the BRICS business forum leaders’ dialogue in New Delhi, in India, Ramaphosa called for more investment in manufacturing and local production, mineral beneficiation, energy, infrastructure and logistics. He said Africa should not continue exporting minerals while other countries benefit from processing and manufacturing:

# The Electoral Commission has asked the Electoral Court to dismiss the ANC’s appeal over candidate lists for six municipalities. The affected municipalities are in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. The IEC says the ANC failed to formally submit its lists before the deadline and rejects claims that technical problems with its online system caused the delay. The ANC’s Mahlengi Bhengu says glitches prevented the party’s officials from completing the submission process:

# The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has urged motorists and the public to be cautious of criminals posing as police or traffic officers. This follows the discovery of a Gauteng Traffic Police uniform at a property in Dawn Park, where a stolen Chery Tiggo 7 was also recovered. The provincial traffic police spokesperson, Sello Maremane, advises the public to avoid confronting suspected fake officers and never hand over money, documents or personal belongings:

# Two prominent Hong Kong democracy activists have been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for subversion under the territory’s national security law. Lee Cheuk-yan was jailed for seven years, while human rights lawyer Chow Hang-tung received seven years and three months. Both were leaders of the now-disbanded Hong Kong Alliance, which organised annual vigils marking the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. A third leader, Albert Ho, was previously sentenced to five years after pleading guilty. The sentences come amid a wider crackdown on political dissent in Hong Kong.

# Soccer: Polokwane City midfielder Manuel Kambala has been called up to Mozambique’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures. The 34-year-old is a regular for the Mambas and has previously represented his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. Kambala has made a strong start to the new Premiership season with Polokwane, who are among the early front-runners. The midfielder will now join Mozambique as they prepare for their next international assignments, adding experience to the Mambas squad.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-12-cents against the rand and the euro at 18-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-81-cents and Bitcoin trades at 77-thousand-72-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-387-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 106-dollars-6-cents a barrel.
